General Music Classes | Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 students will be busy connecting music to their classroom letters and themes. We will also be continuing our work with our monthly nursery rhyme and our study of beat, rhythm, singing, and playing instruments through various activities. We are also gearing up to begin preparations for our Pre-K Culmination Celebration!! We can't wait to show you the fun songs we've been working on to share for the big day!!!! Kindergartners will continue learning the building blocks of music and working with a mix of melody and rhythm days where we will use the Rhythm Band Curriculum and the Pre-School Prodigies Curriculum to build our musical vocabularies and skills! In a special cross-curricular project, we will be beginning to work on composing our own songs about the community helper we have chosen to research in the Kindergarten classroom!! These songs, along with projects from the other special area classes will be shared at a special "Community Helpers Celebration" in the Kindergarten classroom later this spring!! We LOVE combining what we are learning in our Kindergarten Classroom with what we are learning in the Music Room!!!! First Graders will continue learning the building blocks of music and working with a mix of melody and rhythm days where we will use the Rhythm Band Curriculum and the Pre-School Prodigies Curriculum to build our musical vocabularies and skills! We spent the past few music classes learning about rhythms through Sweet Beets and Pre-School Prodigies and exploring how different rhythmic values come together to form a whole measure of music. In Sweet Beets, Mr. Rob used a fantastic pizza analogy in the song "Za Time" so we decided to make paper measure pizzas. The students chose their own beat values ----- cheese for quarter note, veggie for eighth note, and pepperoni for sixteenth note ----- and put them together to form four beat pizza measures. When a student asked if we could really eat the pizzas, I was pretty inspired by his creativity so I came together with Mrs. Hussey and Mrs. Ball to develop a pizza making project. This week, the First Graders will be traveling to the faculty kitchen in the basement during Wednesday's recess and lunch periods to turn their paper pizza measures into personal pan pizzas!!!!! We'll be topping our pan pizzas the same way that we topped our paper ones and then enjoying them during a special musical pizza picnic during music class!! I LOVE combining music, math, arts and crafts, cooking, and more into an amazing lesson!!!! Second and Third Graders will be completing a special unit about the instruments of the orchestra as we prepare to choose what instrument we will be playing in next year's Beginning Band program!!! Through the magic of the internet, the children will be heading out with Carnegie Hall's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and exploring the wonderful world of instrumental music!!!! |
